Breath of Fire (1993): The Legend of the Dragon Warrior! | Capcom Quest #111

I think Fast Forward should be one feature in RPGs, especially in those with GIANT maps. Capcom Quest of Breath of Fire! The war against the Dark Dragons!

The first thing that surprised me was that Capcom hired Square Soft to translate the game in English. This was one of my complaints about the Destiny of Emperor, the translation was understandable but had some mistakes, very common thing in that time.

The game's lore is that well-known fight between good and evil, where the good is the Light Dragons clan who want to prevent the Dark Dragons, who are the villains, gather the 6 keys to free the goddess Tyr, or Myria (depends on the version). It's obvious that many things happen in history, but this is up to you, who have to play and discover xD

As you already know, the game is a turn-based RPG, with those very classic mechanics. The innovation, at least for me, is that you are able to play with a protagonist who becomes a dragon and also the fusions, which I will comment soon.

The grinding was something very natural in my run, I did not spend any time training my characters, also I didn't focus on equipping all the characters with the best items!

I took all my gameplay to realize that this was the option that compared your equipped items to the ones you are buying. I always had to buy items and see if it was worth equipping or not. I honestly did not understand the meaning to create a separate option to compare items, it would be much better if they left it together with the other.

It's impossible do not talk about how slow the characters are walking on the map, even more in parts where the respawn of enemies is great. Seriously, it took me 20 hours to beat the game, but that's because I used a lot "Fast Forward", otherwise I think it would be another 10 hours easy!

There are 8 characters, and all of them make part of your team along the journey (none is secret). Most of them have skills to be used on the map, such as Bo that in addition to crossing trees he also uses his bow to hunt animals and recover HP!

But the coolest is Karn! This guy, has the ability to remove traps from the chests, and can also learn the fusion technique, which are 4 versions!

This problem is NOT EXCLUSIVE of this game, but it's also here, it's the npcs that get stuck in some doors or in places where you need to pass. Sometimes they get more than 10 seconds stopped and you can not progress in the game.

And of course, the classic. Questions that, even having two options, you need to answer the right one, otherwise npc will ask you the same question forever...

What made me happy is that much things changed with the Game Boy Advance version! Really, Capcom improved a lot in that version. The characters walk much faster, the menu is more intuitive, including to compare equipment. Even the grinding, which I did not criticize, they doubled the XP!

For me the only thing missing from the gba version was a mini map, sometimes we get lost. And I also found the colors a bit blurry...

Although Capcom has already worked on other rpgs, it was with Breath of Fire that the company became known in this genre, even nowadays, most players think BoF was the first and only rpg franchise that Capcom ever made. Well, I was included in this group until a while ago xD

It All Starts Here!
